Growing up in Cuba, she remained focused on her professional goals, and graduated with honors from Institute of Medical Sciences of Santiago de Cuba, Dental Faculty, at the age of just 23! She then worked 2 years in La Caoba – an underserved rural Cuban community.
After 2003, she then embarked on a three-year course of advanced study in a Prosthodontics residency. However, after one year her studies were interrupted by the Cuban government, who sent her to work in Venezuela. Again, she put her dental training to work in a number of Venezuelan underserved communities for two years, from 2004 to 2006. Upon the end of her service, she moved to the United States in December of that year.
Needing to go through the required steps to obtain her dental license in the U.S., from 2007 to 2010 she worked as a Dental Assistant in Las Vegas while concurrently studying for the dental tests needed for enrollment in a stateside university.
This eventually led to her acceptance into the international student program at Colorado University in 2010. Dr. Katy earned her D.D.S. degree in December 2012, just six years after immigrating.
After graduation, she was recruited as an Associate Dentist with The Smile Center, where she remained until 2018 when the practice was sold. After working primarily with children served by Medicaid (60% of patients), her clinical and "chair-side" manner expertise and skills transitioned easily to Dental Star Texas.
For the next six months, she continued to enhance her abilities while considering her next career move...which led to the purchase of Dr. Copeland's dental practice in Castle Hills. In the past four-plus years, she has provided personalized oral health care – the hallmark of her practice philosophy – to both the legacy patients of Dr. Copeland and the new patients who have discovered Dr. Katy's gift for creating smiles wherever she goes!
This impressive combination of education and practical experience – much of which may be charitably described as under "less than ideal" conditions – certainly more-than-qualifies Dr. Katy to perform exemplary dentistry. But...what about her legacy of smiles OUTSIDE of the office? Well, let's start with her time in La Caoba, where she was deeply involved in community activities. This included creating a children theater club in the village to raise awareness of dental problems, organizing a teenage mambo dance club, acting as judge for the local beauty pageant AND
singing at the House of Culture!
This zeal to spread joyful smiles continued during her two years in Venezuela, where Dr. Katy was equally involved in community activities. She volunteered to instruct Zumba classes for the ladies of Manuare and Tacarigua... the little towns where she worked. Simultaneously, she also created a merengue dance club with the children of Manuare, and planned play events for the local children. See? More smiles!
Once stateside, her desire to share smiles AND information. During the years prior to the pandemic school lockdowns, she visited Montgomery and Larkspur Elementary schools to perform puppet stories designed to create awareness of how dental problems can affect everyday life and demonstrate proper brushing techniques.
And, if that's not enough, in addition to running a successful dental practice and volunteering her time, Dr. Katy is also a mom to a daughter (Sabrina) – who is on the autism spectrum – and a son (Sebastian). Her leisure interests include dancing, singing, reading, watching movies, and taking her children to their favorite parks, Hemisfair and Landa...all despite being a cancer survivor!
One day, she dreams of taking an extended vacation traveling across America in an RV, with her husband and children, to visit our beautiful national natural parks.
